About the Dalton Branch
Dalton Branch Library—By the Lakes
Located in Twin Lake, the Dalton branch is one of our northern branches located off M-120. It has a population of 1,720 residents, and covers an area just under three miles, with 320 acres of water, which provides many summer and winter sports activities. North Lake, West Lake, Twin Lake, Middle Lake and Fox Lake are all part of Dalton Township.
This branch opened in March 1959, as the eighth library in the system. Originally it was housed in a building on the school grounds that also held a lunchroom and third grade classrooms. It moved to its present location in April, 1964. Previously the area was served by the county library bookmobile. Its hours of operation have increased from 12 to 47 hours per week.
If you are a child attending Twin Lake Elementary, you know that the Dalton Township Branch of the Muskegon Area District Library is annexed to the school building. Reeths-Puffer School District students know that this is their local library, where they can find books, movies and a place for adventure.
Since 1969, Storytimes have been held once a week during the school year. Because of the close proximity to classrooms, classes plan regular ongoing trips to the library.
The area served by the library is largely within Dalton Township, with a section to the east in Cedar Creek Township. Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Gerber Scout and the Owasippe Scout Reservations, and the very popular Michigan’s Adventure are also located in Dalton Township.
In 2017, there were over 30,000 visits to this branch, and 3,139 people attended 116 programs. A wide array of programs are offered including crafts, educational, and entertaining options.
Library users know that their MADL library card provides them with more items than what can be seen on the shelves. Patrons can download many free items to their devices like audio and e-books, have fun with music, movies and television shows, and even learn a foreign language. High demand items at the Dalton Branch include juvenile and adult fiction books as well as magazines.
The Dalton Book Club holds monthly meetings where the group reads the same book and participates in lively discussions. Also, the Twin Lake Historical Society uses the building for their monthly meetings and to store their collection of local historical information.
